Medical first steps for student pilots

How to begin an appropriate medical conversation without treating a website as medical advice.

Know the decision belongs with the right people

Medical certification is governed by FAA rules and your individual circumstances. An Aviation Medical Examiner can explain the current process; do not submit medical details through a marketing form.

Start early when it matters

If your intended certificate or career goal involves a medical certificate, consider asking an AME about timing before making major training commitments. Your instructor can help explain which questions to bring.

Use current sources

FAA requirements can change. Confirm current rules with the FAA, an AME, and the school’s approved guidance rather than relying on a general article.

Take this into your conversation.

Write down your goal, what you already know and what you need the school to confirm. Leave with a clear next step, not an assumption.
